For every product that is sold on the market, there must first be a product design. Product designs may vary slightly or significantly from similar products on the market. A new feature that may not have been previously added to a product is conceptualized in the actual product design. In this way, products can be updated with technology to be reintroduced to the public. Minor changes to age old products can create new innovations that advance humanity. Items such as colors, sizes, functionality and practicality are all issues that designers must keep in mind when designing products. What looks good on paper may not even work if the design is flawed. For this reason people are trained in product designing to help eliminate known issues to pre-existing products and to create new products. Take for instance the automobile. Somewhere along the way someone thought it would be a good idea to have a convertible roof. The product designer would be responsible on designing the best possible way to achieve this feat. Not only is the roof itself taken into consideration but also how to make the roof function as well. This is where a design specialist would need to be hired to bring the idea one step closer to reality.
Some product designers create designs that aren’t very practical but may have a place nevertheless. Take for instance a computer design with a razor thin cpu. This may be a great idea in theory, however making a working prototype would be nearly impossible. The futuristic design may be useful for others who may want to view it as art or a testament to where computers may be one day or even just a new concept for that particular product. In any event the product design would still be considered useful. If a designer were to come up with a cpu that could reduce the size from standard models sold, this would be more useful along with other changes that would alter the traditional cpu’s in use.
Another example would be a new invention. It is one thing to think of something new but trying to create it would take a well thought out design first. When designing products, designers have to ask themselves questions, including the following; where would the manufactures brand go? Is it compatible with existing technology? Can it be made at a cost efficient price? Is the market ready for the product in the way it’s designed? Let’s say hypothetically a designer is told to design a new cell phone model with style in mind. No matter how stylish the phone is there are still certain areas that must always be covered. The design must have a keypad, antenna room and a place to plug in a charger etc. So the designer would have to have some knowledge of the product first no matter what it is. Simply coming up with a nice drawing wouldn’t be enough. This is where designers with experience and know how would need to be employed.
