Medical product design is simply product designing from a medical standpoint. Not only is it vital for designers to have the standard product design knowledge, they must also have some medical knowledge as well. Failing to develop a suitable product could place lives in danger. Strict regulations must be followed when producing medical product designs to ensure that the public safety is maintained. In some cases software may need to be developed that works in conjunction with the medical device in question. These types of designs should be made with safety and cost in mind as well as industry standards. It may be in a person’s best interest to seek out a company that deals solely with the medical industry. However it isn’t absolutely necessary and doesn’t mean the average company can’t handle your needs. The most important thing is the research that goes into the design. Once the data is gathered and analyzed, any competent company should be able to deliver what you need. Later on down the line the product will need to be tested and a study group may need to be brought in. This will allow for better testing and preparation for the market. Again, if the bugs aren’t all worked out and the product comes out with flaws, it may be recalled. Not only recalled but if someone is injured from the product there may be lawsuits brought against the company. To avoid these downfalls, make sure that the medical product designers are aware of the unique medical related issues that may arise from the finished product.

For the best results in new product designs it’s best to outsource the work to product design consultant firms. This will allow you to focus on other areas of the product such as the business aspect and ultimately the projected revenue potential. I will cover some general business practices that should be followed when deciding on consultants throughout this article. Not all cases are the same but I’m sure you will find the information presented valuable nevertheless.

Where to begin
When you are trying to decide on a firm to handle your specific needs, consider the following;

1. Is their staff size large enough to handle my project or even multiple projects?
2. What is their reputation like and how many years do they have in business?
3. Are they reliable, easy to work with and customer service orientated?
4. Do they offer affordable rates for the service provided?
5. Are they in it for the long run?

These are just a few basic questions you will need to find out before you select the best product design consultants.

Common consultant services
Not all consultants are the same and the standards may vary depending on the product or the particular industry in which the product is apart of. Let’s say hypothetically you are looking for medical product design. This differs drastically from the automotive sector yet there are similarities in they way the product consultant would handle each. Market research would still need to be completed; drawings and a working model would have to be developed as well as product testing regardless of the product.

Just because a firm may specialize in a particular field such as medical devices doesn’t mean they can’t design a microwaves also. Although a company may seek out consultants who are more knowledgeable in certain industries, other
consultant firms should still be taken into consideration. The more hands on the consultants are the better the results if you are looking for product innovation. Just simply by contracting a consultant may lead to an overall better product because they may come up with things you never even imagined. As they say, two heads are better than one! Bringing in a product design consultant is by far a wise decision.

Further steps to take
If the electronic product design consultants you are planning on hiring has products they have developed on the market already, it won’t hurt to try them out. This will give you a better understanding of who you are dealing with and what they are capable of. The same can be said about other aspects of the product such as the designs, prototype, packaging etc. Just ask them to show you what they offer for each step that goes into product design. If you would like to go further by contacting their past clients, it certainly won’t hurt. Just remember that certain information at the company level is very sensitive and that confidentiality clauses may be in place that will prevent the mechanical product design consultants from discussing everything.

Industrial design may include not only drawn illustrations of products but also intricate functionality specs as well. Viewing industrial designs from this prospective will give you the understanding of the inner workings of products along with its visible design. The art of creating a nice model that provides the necessary information on how the product works is also apart of industrial designing. An industrial designer needs to be up to speed on what is out on the market and how their model differs from them. This is where technical skills along with visual art knowledge are needed. What powers the product, which parts are interchangeable and/or replicable and much more are all thought up and specs are created.

For whatever industry the product is designed for, there needs to be something that separates the product from the pack. In this case industrial designers have to be concerned with more than creating eye candy. The look and feel of the product is just one area of a larger goal for designers. Just imagine having to recall a product simply because the design can’t hold up to consumer’s standards. This is what happens when poorly conceptualized models are released with the focus solely being the exterior of the product. Well seasoned industrial designers can quickly overcome such downfalls with precise designs.

In many cases designers may be brought in to update a company’s previous product line. Rather than re-invent the wheel, an industrial designer would create something that rolls faster if you will. In this type of situation pressure is removed from the designer who would otherwise have to re-create the wheel. Simply by examining the product and implementing minor changes would normally suffice. However, someone may be contracted to create an industrial product design from scratch. In most cases the company would allow the designers information and tools from various departments within their company which will aide them. Areas such as marketing, product placement and past sales reports may be helpful in coming up with the best possible product. Recent changes in the market, price comparisons and emerging technology can all be utilized by a designer as they work. Take for example mp4 watches that came out a few years ago. Even though the product is useful and seemed like a product consumers would line up for, it hasn’t really caught on big. Industrial designers who are called in would figure out not only how to improve the product but also, how it could be marketed to attract consumers. This is where the description from product designer to industrial product designer becomes blurred. Product designers may design the original prototype but the industrial designer would go the extra mile with more precise information related to the design.

The best advice to give anyone looking for an industrial designer is to contact someone with experience and that can offer you useful insight. Don’t be afraid to let the designer push the envelope and design according to their abilities. As long as you provide the necessary information to them, the sky is the limit.

For every product that is sold on the market, there must first be a product design. Product designs may vary slightly or significantly from similar products on the market. A new feature that may not have been previously added to a product is conceptualized in the actual product design. In this way, products can be updated with technology to be reintroduced to the public. Minor changes to age old products can create new innovations that advance humanity. Items such as colors, sizes, functionality and practicality are all issues that designers must keep in mind when designing products. What looks good on paper may not even work if the design is flawed. For this reason people are trained in product designing to help eliminate known issues to pre-existing products and to create new products. Take for instance the automobile. Somewhere along the way someone thought it would be a good idea to have a convertible roof. The product designer would be responsible on designing the best possible way to achieve this feat. Not only is the roof itself taken into consideration but also how to make the roof function as well. This is where a design specialist would need to be hired to bring the idea one step closer to reality.

Some product designers create designs that aren’t very practical but may have a place nevertheless. Take for instance a computer design with a razor thin cpu. This may be a great idea in theory, however making a working prototype would be nearly impossible. The futuristic design may be useful for others who may want to view it as art or a testament to where computers may be one day or even just a new concept for that particular product. In any event the product design would still be considered useful. If a designer were to come up with a cpu that could reduce the size from standard models sold, this would be more useful along with other changes that would alter the traditional cpu’s in use.

Another example would be a new invention. It is one thing to think of something new but trying to create it would take a well thought out design first. When designing products, designers have to ask themselves questions, including the following; where would the manufactures brand go? Is it compatible with existing technology? Can it be made at a cost efficient price? Is the market ready for the product in the way it’s designed? Let’s say hypothetically a designer is told to design a new cell phone model with style in mind. No matter how stylish the phone is there are still certain areas that must always be covered. The design must have a keypad, antenna room and a place to plug in a charger etc. So the designer would have to have some knowledge of the product first no matter what it is. Simply coming up with a nice drawing wouldn’t be enough. This is where designers with experience and know how would need to be employed.

The ideas put forward within the manifesto aim to examine the impact of the Internet on both markets (consumers) and organizations. In addition, as both consumers and organizations are able to utilize the Internet and Intranets to establish a previously unavailable level of communication both within and between these two groups, the manifesto suggests that the changes that will be required from organizations as they respond to the new marketplace environment.

The authors assert that the Internet is unlike the ordinary media used in mass marketing as it enables people to have “human to human” conversations, which have the potential to transform traditional business practices radically.
